Through the 20th century the company grew and diversified. For example, by the 1910s it had added alternator and starter, rotating electric capability. Now in its 150th year, Lucas continues to diversify its automotive products across multiple lines.

Origins

Joseph Lucas, born in Birmingham in 1834, began dealing paraffin oil for domestic lamps in the 1860s and soon saw potential to expand into the transport market.

In 1872 Lucas Industries was founded in Birmingham, UK, and started as a manufacturer of lamps for bicycles. In 1875 he opened a small workshop on Little King Street, Birmingham, U.K. with 5 employees and later became a major supplier of electrical equipment for cars, including headlights.

By the early 1900s, Lucas were expanding their product range and introduced their batteries to the market. Automotive batteries are at the core of the Lucas brand since the beginning.
